Die Landessprache der Malediven heisst Dhivehi, gleich wie der Eigenname des Staates, Dhivehi Raajje, was "Inselkönigreich" bedeutet.
Dhivehi gehört zur indogermanischen Sprachfamilie und entstand vor über 1500 Jahren parallel zum Singhalesischen aus einem gemeinsamen Ursprung. Viele Sprachen haben Dhivehi beeinflusst, insbesondere das Arabische, welches seit dem 12. Jahrhundert den größten Einfluss auf Wortschatz und Schrift hatte. Auch Singhalesisch, Hindi, Persisch, Malayalam und in jüngerer Zeit vor allem Englisch haben ihre Spuren im Wortschatz hinterlassen.
Auf Grund der großen Entfernungen zwischen den Inseln der Malediven haben sich mehrere Dialekte mit teils erheblichen Unterschieden in Aussprache und Wortschatz herausgebildet, daher können zwischen Sprechern nördlicher Mundarten und Sprechern südlicher Dialekte Verständnisschwierigkeiten auftreten.
